Making your own cheese is unbelievably easy. Haloumi and paneer feature prominently in modern restaurant and cafe dishes and it is exciting to bring these into your home.
As you can learn in our workshops, haloumi originated in Cyprus. It has become incredibly popular in recent years. It’s especially delicious thrown on a barbecue or grill and in salads. It goes well with Mediterranean flavours and is also a hit at breakfast with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce.
To make your own Haloumi is very easy and super quick! It takes one afternoon and you can eat it on the same day or you can store it in a brine solution for several weeks.
Haloumi is sometimes called “squeaky cheese” due to its feel and texture when eating. The brine gives the cheese a slightly salty flavour and of course you can adjust this to suit your own tastebuds, unlike store bought halloumi which is often very salty.
Paneer is a high-protein cheese that is the most common type of cheese used in traditional Indian cuisine. It has a mild, milky flavour and firm texture and is usually cut up into cubes. It goes deliciously well in curries.
